What Causes Small Black Spots And Floaters In Left Eye Post An Head Injury?

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Jun 2016
Question: I fell down three days ago and hit my head on the left side. Maybe 3 hours later in my left eye small black spots and some long hair like particles cross over my eye on the outer left side. I feel no pain but my question is could I have possibly detached part of that left eye retina?? If so do I need to see an eye doctor or a regular doctor??

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, thanks for asking.

I can understand your concern. Head injury near eye can cause retinal detachment. Retinal detachment presents as

: Sudden appearance of black spots or loss of part of visual field
: Progressive increase in size of black spot or loss due to progressive retinal detachment
: No pain in eye
: As such only retinal injury does not manifest any haemorrhage or swelling in visible part of eye. Such manifestation occurs with conjunctival or corneal injury.

In your case, you noticed black spots and long hair particles on outer left side of eye. I assuming that you are talking about spots on outer conjuctiva of eye. If it is so, it can not be said that you are having retinal detachment.
It is conjunctival haemorrhage.

But if you are talking about such spots in your left eye vision (Floaters), outer part, it could be due to
: Retinal detachment
: Vitreous fluid bleed

After matching your condition, you can reach upto some conclusion. There is difference in management.

: Conjunctival haemorrhage is managed by conservative approach and decongestant eye drops. It resolves on its own in 10-14 days.

: Retinal detachment or Vitreous bleed are emergency condition. Urgent ophthalmology evaluation is needed. The doctor will examine your retina.

After confirming detachment, retina is managed by
: Laser photocoagulation if only a rent and no proper layer lifting
: Silicone oil injection and prone position lying if proper tear
: Nitrogen Gas Injection and prone position lying
Its treatment is of long duration.

Your age is 58 years which is a risk factor for retinal detachment, so you should consult ophthalmologist. Do not worry, if it is shown urgently, maximum recovery is possible.

Hope it will help you. If still any doubt, you can ask me.

Thanks. Take care.
