Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: After I washed my face and gently rubbed my eyes to remove makeup, I noticed a broken blood vessel in the white part of my eye. I is about a quarter the size of a pea and doesn't seem to be getting bigger so far. What could it be and should I be worried about it tonight?

Brief Answer:
Broken capillary

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

A broken capillary in the white of your eye occurs due to eye strain, rubbing too hard, injury or particles that rub on your eye. Even sneezing, blowing your nose, coughing or throwing up can cause this.
If it doesn't increase in size/or hurt, there is nothing to worry about.

Wash your eye with cool and clean water. XXXXXXX dry. Apply cool gently compress (wet & squeezed cotton) for a night.

This will recover in a week usually and may take upto 2 weeks. It's like a bruise. It'll lighten up, change colors to pink to yellowish and normalize.

If your eye swells up, hurts a lot, or redness spreads to the whole eye, I'd like you to see your ophthalmologist for corneal injury or retained particles.

When you travel, use protective glasses always.

Else don't worry.
