What Causes Slurred Speech And Loss Of Control Of Arms And Legs?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 May 2017
Question: Often I fall into something like a drunken stupor. I lose all control of my arms and legs. My speech has been described as sounding all slurred and stumbling, my eyes are rolling. I feel helpless and start yelling for help but it's not understandable. Something like trying to have a stroke I guess. It's damned scary.

Brief Answer:
Cataplexy and seizures to consider.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

There is need to get evaluated by your Neurologist about your problems, in order to differentiate between cataplexy ( a sudden loss of muscles tone accompanied by slurred speech and vision problems ), that is usually triggered by sudden emotional changes, and partial complex seizures.

Besides neurological evaluation, tests such EEG and brain MRI could be necessary to get a correct understanding of your condition.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Kind regards.

Sorry, I for got to mention: This has never happened during the active daytime. It mostly happens in the evening. Have had the problem occur while taking a bath, sitting down reviewing the computer before bed, even while in the kitchen fixing a before bed snack. Have been standing and lost most all muscle control and fall to the floor. What's weird is I remember what has happened.

Brief Answer:
Both conditions mentioned don't affect consciousness.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

Both conditions mentioned in our previous conversation don't cause consciousness problems, you can be fully awake and conscious during cataplexy and partial complex seizures.

So, getting evaluated further is necessary to get a correct diagnosis.

Hope I helped you.

Take care.
