What Causes Severe Swelling In Hands And Feet, Chills, Constant Nausea And Fatigue?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Dec 2015
Question: MY husband has severe swelling in his hands and feet; chills without fever; tenderness in arms and legs as well as hands and feet; almost constant nausea; frequent, debilitating fatigue. He's seen both a GP and a rheumatologist who have run extensive tests, especially blood work. Initial screening showed an indicator for Hoshomoto's disease. Thyroid medication made no difference. All tests run by rheumatologists came back negative. Can you suggest something our doctors should investigate?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I am sorry that your husband is having these problems. If the Hashimoto's is not the cause of the symptoms then it is possible that the cause could be a problem with his heart or some sort of yet undiagnosed infectious disease. I suggest a referral to a cardiologist first and if that does not turn up a cause then a referral to an infectious disease specialist. Heart disease can sometimes present as nausea instead of chest pain and swelling of the limbs and fatigue is also common with heart failure. Likewise an infection could also cause most of his symptoms. Sometimes infectious diseases are hard to identify and seeing an infectious disease specialist could help sort this out. I would suggest that he see the cardiologist first since heart disease could be more dangerous.
