Posted on Sat, 20 May 2017
Question: My symptoms are an intense itching around vulva area and up higher, general irritation feeling with discharge. My Pap test results came back normal with no signs of bacteria or yeast. Also when Doctor did pap he saw a lot of redness inside vagina. He put me on an antibiotic called flagystatin for 10 days. That was three weeks ago. There has been no change in symptoms . Any idea what could be going on?

Brief Answer:
I'd suggest that you get a culture sensitivity done!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for contacting us at HealthcareMagic.

The most common causes of vaginal itches and discharge are candida (A fungus) and trichomonas.

Your doctor has covered for these already with Flagystatin. Because symptoms seem not to have improved, I'd suggest that you get a vaginal swab culture and sensitivity alalysis. This will identify the exact pathogen and what antibiotic can act on it.

This way, your treatment would be targeted and adapted.

I hope the guides and helps. Please keep me updated about this.

Kind regards

Brief Answer:
PAP smear looks for abnormal cells, culture looks for germs and pathogens.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

PAP smear is used to look for abnormal cells which are suggestive of possible malignancy. However, cultures looks for germs. When the pathogen/germ is isolated, different antibiotics are tested to see which works best and that’s what we refer to as sensitivity testing.

This way, we identify the germ and what antibiotic can act on it and we specifically tailor the prescriptions to kill this germ.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.
Kind regards
