Posted on Fri, 23 Sep 2016
Question: Hi Doctor,

I had a ACL surgery on my left knee on Feb 1st 2016 and it’s been six months now, I still have pain while climbing stairs or getting down from the stairs, I cannot squat and sit on the floor. I had gone through the physiotherapy soon after the surgery and even continued it for two months after surgery now since I am back to my routine life I am unable to do exercise because of my tight schedule.

Please suggest me since I am afraid that If have to live with this pain for my whole life.

P.S : over all I am healthy person with no health issue so far in my life though I have added lot of weight recently now I am 105 kgs :(

Brief Answer:
weight reduction is the key

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX

Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

How was your day?
Hope this message finds you in good health.

I have gone through your query in detail and understand your concern.

Its almost 6 months now and its less likely that you should still get knee pain.

Either there may be something wrong in your surgery or the body weight and lack of exercises is causing the problem.

If the surgery was not done properly, then you should experience knee instability along with pain. If there is no associated instability, then it should be considered that the surgery was done properly.

knee, is a weight bearing joint, 90 % of body weight is borne by knees. Even a person with normal knees will experience knee pain with 105 kg body weight. its tough for an operated knee to bear so much weight.

getting you weight down, will automatically reduce the load over it and in turn reduce the pain.

So,sooner or later, you have to reduce weight, or the knees will gradually wear off and cause problems later on.

For time being, you should start knee muscle building exercises that you must have learnt during the physiotherapy sessions in early 2 months.

taking pain killer medicines and using knee caps will reduce pain temporarily.

You should eventually get back to normal in coming few days.Nothing to worry about.

I hope your question has been answered.
