Question: Can I get fibromyalsia -I'm a 60 year old woman who has exercised and done yoga and horsebackriding my whole life. This past year I ache all over and get headaches which I never got before. certain parts of my body actually hurt just to be touched. (Not hit, just touched), Every muscle in my body hurts. I can't sleep well anymore. Sometimes my legs feel like I need to run when I trying to fall asleep.

Brief Answer:
fibromyalgia is real

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
The doctor that told you that fibromyalgia is a figment of your imagination is misinformed and I strongly urge you to seek another physician. While we do not yet know the cause of fibromyalgia, it is quite real. It may be caused by a virus, we are just not certain at present. Venlafaxine combined with either Neurontin or Lyrica may give you some relief. Tramadol works well for some patients with fibro as well. In addition, aerobic exercise and muscle relaxants can also help.
I am not saying that you have it but your symptoms certainly fit. I suggest you see a rheumatologist that specializes in treatment of fibromyalgia to get a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
The leg issue may be restless leg and a sleep study would be needed to diagnose that.
Keep doing the yoga and add something aerobic like running or swimming. Physical therapy may be helpful as well.
I hope you get some relief soon,
Dr. Robinson

I liked your answer! Drs are very down on prescribing tramadol. Because of my horseback riding accident in addition to fibromyalgia I need these. I broke10 ribs and collarbone have 7 plates in ribs. Because they punctured my lung. So if u can refer me to a dr within 20 miles of Collegeville pa I would really be appreciative.

Thanks and regards
