What Causes Severe Bloating, Weight Gain And Headache Post A Hip Replacement Surgery?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Mar 2016
Question: Since I had my hip replacement I have gained weight. I did exercise, living on a strict diet, make sure there is more coming out then going in, but nothing. Lately also my upper stomach starts to protrude. I have no appetite, but I hardly ever had. Eating is an unavoidable habit. I love sweets, but don't allow them because of the weight gain. I have extreme bloating, I cant walk without some air silently escaping my backside. I burp when pressing on my upper stomach and after eating or drinking I cant bend down without everything comes up in an undigested form. I have no pain or fever. I do have my teeth extracted next week because of content abscesses and gum disease. I don't take any medication not even painkiller. I take supplements to make sure I get all the vitamins and minerals I need but which are missing in my diet. I don't drink, I don't smoke, No processed food or soft drinks I am nearly 66 and female. I have no other problems except my back is not good and I have sciatica and problems with my spine in the neck which sometimes presses on a nerve which gives me headaches. But even then I don't take painkiller.

Simple diet changes will help you a lot

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to HealthcareMagic.

I have read your query and being a pharmacologist myself, I agree with most of your observations. Medicines are very over-prescribed nowadays. This results in unnecessary and avoidable side effects and mortality.

The symptoms like bloating, weight gain are due to medicines affecting liver and weak digestion. Back issues may get worse because of swollen abdomen.
There may be bacterial overgrowth in the gut that may get better temporarily with antibiotics like cefazolin. Sugars and complex undigested proteins always worsen the infection in the gut.

Yes diet changes are definitely needed like avoiding sugar and sugary treats, avoiding complex proteins like beans, etc. Tummy massage with the ILU massage technique is also good. In XXXXXXX we usually revert to ayurvedic preparations meant for bloating. Those are very effective in relieving the excessive gas and are safer than allopathic medicines. My favorite ones are Gasex by Himalaya and Gasso churna. If you can find one such preparation at a local XXXXXXX grocery store, please try once. Even these should be used on long term.

The best and safest approach is to drink cleanest water from reverse osmosis technique. You can get this as bottled water at local grocery stores. These filters are also available for installation at home.

Regarding back pain, please try yoga postures like cat stretch pose that can be slowly done three times with breath. Also sit in vajrasan for 5-10 min. These two poses help relieve back pain.

Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Medicine cant affect my liver and digestion since I don't take any. I have a lifelong problem with IBS. Cutting out sugar had no effect except that I was so unpleasant that I myself could not stand my company.
Beans or no beans have no effect.
It gets worse when I eat green vegetables.
My stomach problems are now for the last 5 years. After the hip replacement my stomach started to grow and it looked like I was pregnant. Since 1 year, after I had to give up the gym because of my back problem, I've put on another 5 kg. I am now 65 kg. I am 1.60m tall. I do drink water, but I've noticed that drinking causes more reflux then eating. I've tried Yoghurt to balance the bacteria in the gut. I've went on a curse of deworming.

Sorry but the timer went to 5 seconds before automatic closing. I have tried everything. Every diet cutting out this, cutting out that, I just want to know what causes the gas the reflux the regurgitating, the weight that does not go down, my constant tiredness, the fatigue. I want to be like a normal person. I don't go out anymore because I am ashamed of my belly. And I am in London, so XXXXXXX treatments are no option

BTW. I don't have problems going to the toilet. Sometimes 2 or 3 times. No blood, no mucus, no floating, sometimes a bit like goat pup, many small round balls. Not smelly, and not very dark

Please try suggestions

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Thanks for your detailed reply. I had gotten basic idea from your first query and your reply adds to it. Overall you seem to be a healthy person. IBS is a very common condition and so is bloating and weight gain.

IBS, weight gain, bloating, are most probably manifestations of same condition i.e bacterial overgrowth. These gut infections can cause conditions like liver issues, kidney issues, thyroid issues etc. Thus I suggest that you get the basic blood tests to rule out these conditions. The blood tests should include complete blood count, liver function test, kidney function test, thyroid profile, lipid profile, fasting blood sugar. These tests will give a good idea about the condition.

Till then please apply the above recommendations word to word. You will feel the difference. Since most gut infections are caused by drinking water, seriously consider drinking cleaner water.

There are XXXXXXX stores in London but its ok if you don't want to take XXXXXXX medicine.

Hope it clears your doubts. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Unfortunately I don't go to regular doctors and even less would I voluntarily visit a hospital. As I mentioned, I had very bad experience with local doctors, and I am not the only one. Mislabelling tests and wrong diagnosis is far too often. My friend just recovered from a cancer scare because of mixed up test results.
The hospitals are a breeding ground for viruses and going in with a flue can mean you come out with a life threatening illness.
Unfortunately I cannot afford private healthcare, and I am too old for any affordable health insurance. That leaves me in the care of the NHS and especially in the area of south London its just 5 minutes doctor and a prescription. Also I had many years ago an argument with a young female doctor and she put into my file that I am a drug addict. Strange since I am not even take painkiller. Every visit to a doctor is now tainted by this note in my file.
When my back is getting too bad, I visit the Chinese Health centre. A few years ago when I still had some confidence, but the same stomach problems, I went for some tests, and they came all out brilliant. The diabetes test I did myself and there is nothing wrong.
I will try to include into my diet some sauerkraut and some biotic yoghurt to increase the good bacteria in my guts. Don't know if that will help, I was taking probiotic supplements, but with no result.
I don't know how I will react to sauerkraut, since I cant eat anything sour, like fruits.
I only drink bottled water, the tab water is disgusting.
I am totally into natural healing with herbs or non chemical supplements, and all advise has to be on that basis.
If you suggest any supplements or herbal remedies, it has to be attainable by internet I have never seen an XXXXXXX health centre

Brief Answer:
Overall no big issue

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Overall, there is no big issue. Mostly due to sedentary lifestyle, lesser exercise, unhealthy eating, people tend to develop such issues like bloating, etc. In bottled water also, please avoid the mineral water.

I dont know how that one note went into system. Mostly whatever a doctor writes in his file, stays with him. Even if she wrote that note in electronic records and it got circulated, you know that you are not a "drug addict". Your behavior will suggest to any doctor or authority that you do not have drug seeking behavior. So you can forget about that note and move on with your life.

It is reassuring that the tests were normal. There is no imminent need for tests. But whenever you get a chance, please get them done. It will give a fair idea about issues.
Human mistakes like change of reports happen. Dont get so worried about it. Even if something shows up on reports, its consumers choice whether to take medicine or not. Many people live without medicines.

If you are taking bottled water, there is no need for sauerkraut, probiotics or probiotic yogurt. In fact curd and yogurt may add to bacterial overgrowth. So avoid these.

Natural healing is better. In my opinion, routinely one should use exercises like yoga, pranayam, walk, gym, etc and hygienic food and enough of cleaner water to maintain health. If health gears out of control, then medicines are needed. For bloating, ayurvedic medicines like gasex or gashar can be taken when really needed. Its a good idea to order it online.

It is good that you are aware of potential toxicity of medicines. Though not all medicines are that bad but I assure that by avoiding unnecessary medicine you are doing a big favor to your health.

Thank you that you told me about sauerkraut and yoghurt. I did not yet had sauerkraut (yuck) but yoghurt. What would be the best diet for me, taking in consideration that because of my back problem I cant do many exercises, to contribute to loosing weight around my tummy area.
As I've said, I cant eat anything that contains fruit acid, and that include Tomatoes and Fruit juice. That causes me cramps
Green vegetables causes me bloating.
I eat a variety of Grain and Seeds dried fruit like Papaya and Pineapple and Raisin.
Nuts like Walnuts, Pecan and Brazil nuts.
My Meat comes from a company who only uses Meat free of antibiotic, chemicals and grow hormones
I eat Eggs and only dark bread or Ryevita.
I eat Red pepper raw or stirfried
Salmon fillet raw, (don't like cooked fish)
Cheese, Brown rice, Whole wheat Pasta.
Beans, (rarely, but with no side effects) (not from the tin)
I drink coffee, and from now on I will only use bottled water. I take sugar, but I have used sugar my whole life and it never had any effect on my weight, only on my energy level. The time I've put on the most weight was when I substituted sugar with sweetener. (bad idea) Anywhere else except from coffee I sweeten with honey.
I drink and use milk, but from now on I will switch from long lasting milk to fresh milk.

Discontinue flaxseed oil and multivitamin

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The most probable cause of your symptoms is flaxseed oil (omega 3, 6, 9). It is being promoted for beneficial effects and even being added to baby formulas but it has a good spectrum of side effects. I really think you should discontinue it.

In the multivitamin also there are a few extracts and supplements like Beta Carotene, Green Tea Extract, Lutein, Coenzyme Q10, Probiotic Mix, Bioperine. These can also have known and unknown side effects. Same thing with Turmeric, Cranberry, Korean Ginseng, Evening Primrose oil. I would not suggest any of these for a normal person.

I feel that you will do much better without these.

I will take your advise and thank you for it.
I only take so many supplements because I believe that with my diet I miss out on many Vitamins and minerals. I also do have arthritis.
What do you think about taking coconut oil instead of the supplements recommended for arthritis.
I was taking Turmeric because of the abscesses and the gum disease, It is suppose to fight infections?
Cranberry, I have bladder problems since 50 years. Thanks to a procedure done by a doctor. Most its psychological, I think. I cant drink Cranberry juice because of the acid.

Brief Answer:
Try vegetarian diet

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your detailed reply.

Regarding arthritis, pain is best managed with painkillers. Rather than taking supplements, please take tablet ibuprofen 200 mg occasionally when pain is bad. Regular pain killers can increase acid.

Coconut oil is better applied outside body. Though in parts of XXXXXXX they cook food in coconut oil. I think it may not suit you.

Avoid fish, especially raw, as it contains fish oil and may worsen your bloating. Omega 3, 6, 9 in any supplement should not be taken.

Turmeric does fight infections. But it should be cooked in oil or milk before taking. It is easily available as powder. You can boil a cup of milk alongwith sugar and 1 tbsp of turmeric powder and drink it. There are turmeric curcumin supplements available and not really needed.

General public needs to be aware that even herbs and natural supplements can have side effects.

I dont know what bladder you have but you must have become habitual of it.

Cheese and butter etc can cause weight gain and better avoided. No need to take cranberry juice if you have acidity. Take only those foods that best suit your health.

Overall, take 3 meals (preferably vegetarian) and 2 snacks (can include fruits and salad) in a day. Take gashar churna when bad bloating, ibuprofen when pain is bad and cefixime (antibiotics) for 5 days if abscesses are troubling. Cefixime is a quite safe and narrow spectrum antibiotic. Apart from this you don't need anything. Vitamins and minerals (calcium, iron etc) are also safe if taken in moderation. Among vitamins, vit A, D, E, K are not to be taken if there is no deficiency as these may accumulate in body.

Hope it helps.

I will take your advise in consideration, but will stay away from painkiller. Not only did I had friends die from painkiller given for arthritis, but I am also very sensitive to Ibuprofen. It causes me horrible cramps in the stomach. The only painkiller I can take is Neuropfen. I eat very little, so 250 g butter and 400g cheese in 2 month cant be the reason for weight gain.
I cant eat vegetables because I react with bloating. I cant eat fruit because of cramps caused by fruit acid.
I HAVE MENTIONED THAT BEFORE
So without my supplements I have vitamin and mineral deficits. It is all worked out, with the minimum and maximum of DRD, taking into consideration any extra I get in by the limited amount of food I can eat. Fishoil or any other Omega 3, 6, 9 did not have any effect on my bloating. I experimented and changed sauce for it. If I leave out omega for a while, I have pain. Every now and then I stop taking supplements to reduce any possible build up, but then my fingernails break, I loose hair and my skin gets flaky which causes me to itch all over specially at night. I do eat very little meat because of the cost. Meat without vegetables are actually the only food I can eat without any side-effects.
As I told you, I have tried everything, from no fat, to no Milk, to no white flour, to raw vegetables, no sugar, no salt, drinking apple cider vinegar, changing supplements, no supplements, nothing, since my hip operation my tummy is bad and I put on weight on the belly.
I was on painkiller in the hospital, but I could not bare the cramps I had from it and refused after a few days to continue to take them.
The burping and farting is not what made me seek advise, but that whenever I bend down food comes up into my mouth even after hours after I've eaten.
I don't think its a hernia.
So before you continue to give me advise I can not follow here is what I want to know:
What can I eat within my limitation to increase the good bacteria in my belly.
What can I eat within my limitation to lose the big belly.
How do I fight my IBS
How to I fight my fatique
I WILL NOT TAKE ANY CHEMICALS ONLY HERBS AWAILABLE IN BRITISH HEALTHSHOPS.
Internet shopping for medication is more then unsafe and the safe sides don't have XXXXXXX supplements

Brief Answer:
Your queries are answered

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Though your queries are long, I still read every word very carefully and then make my judgement. My interest lies in the consumers' best health.

Q: What can I eat within my limitation to increase the good bacteria in my belly.
The good bacteria are already there because of all the supplements you have taken. You dont need any more good bacteria.

Q: What can I eat within my limitation to lose the big belly.
Among the meats, please eat only the muscle part. Strip out the attached fats that can cause weight gain. Exercise within your limits for atleast 30 min a day. A simple walk or doing household work is not effective in reducing weight. Exercises are must but still within your limitations. 5-6 day yoga courses are available throughout world. Once you learn it, you can practice it in your life.

Q: How do I fight my IBS?
Avoid fruit juices and unclean water. Avoid unnecessary medicines.

Q: How to I fight my fatique
We need to find the cause of fatigue. There can be many causes like anemia, depression, thyroid problems, bacterial overgrowth, liver issues, etc. Medicines including natural supplements can affect liver. Next best step is to do a basic blood investigation to find cause. Yoga and meditation are very effective in raising energy levels. 20 min guided meditations are available on youtube as well.

In my observation, whenever natural supplements, especially omega 3, 6, 9, are withdrawn, the person experiences some symptoms. It usually takes a month to get back to a newer body without supplements.
Vitamins and minerals are ok to take. Since you get cramps, please check potassium and calcium levels in body. Low potassium may be causing these cramps.

Take care

Thank you for your reply.
I might have made a mistake in explaining something, or its just a simple misunderstanding.
I got the feeling we are going around in circles.
Originally I've contacted you because of the food that comes up into my mouth every time I bend down and the bloating.
One of the explanations you gave me was that I have an bacterial overgrow in the stomach. Now I've tried to find a way to balance my bacteria. What I found as solution, you reject, I accept. Now you tell me that with the supplements I take I have enough good bacteria. So why do I have PROBLEMS?
Since 3 of my symptoms now seems to came from a bacterial overgrow, what can I do?
I had IBS since childhood, and then I never took supplements.
I did take omega 3, 6, 9 long time before my stomach bloated and I had burping and regurgitating food and drink, and it does not get better when I am on my supplement break. So its not Omega.
I don't eat any fruit or very rarely vegetables, no sweet, very little fat. Mostly I eat oats, seeds, dried fruit without acid, honey, nuts.
As I have said before, Never mind what I eat or don't eat, supplements or not, 5 years of discomfort is too much and I want to have a better life.
My cramps are from IBS.
I have very bad teeth and I think that the bacterial overgrow is because of that.
So, WHAT do I have to take to fight the bacterial overgrow.
I hope for a clear answer without joga which I've tried but hate because it bores me to death. I cant sit still for 1 minute without doing something.
Exercise, I cant do as much as I can, but I can hardly do housework because of my back
I had fatigue, IBS, bad teeth and back pain which got misdiagnosed for hip arthritis and ended up in me having a hip replacement which only doubled my problems, for a long time.
Before the operation I went through a complete check up, but everything is ok. I have the same problems now so don't think that suddenly something changed.
As I've said, I don't go to doctors anymore. I don't don't trust them, and only expect to be misdiagnosed and ending up with more problems then I had before, like all my life.

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms due to lowered immunity

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

I am sorry I am not able to explain it so well. You know the human body is complex and reacts so differently to any thing we expose it to. It reacts to air, water, food, etc. We take various treatments in the hope of getting better, but reality may be different. Things actually get worse with passing time.

So why do I have PROBLEMS? You are not able to comprehend but you are trapped in a vicious circle of ill health and medicine intake. This is leading to lowering of immunity, altered flora, relaxation of sphincters in digestive tract, cramps as a result. This is what is being called as IBS. The dry and flaky skin that you get after stopping supplements is nothing but flora getting altered again. Since you have had IBS since childhood, you probably never had a normal digestive tract. You are not only one and many people suffer from these issues.

OK I will explain it better. Our skin and mucous membranes is covered with healthy microbes that include bacteria and fungi. Once you suppress bacteria, fungi outgrow. These fungi can get superinfected with bacteria and viruses and cause bacterial overgrowth in intestines or viral infections etc. Once the normal bacteria are wiped out, probiotics will not replace it. Probiotics do suppress fungi for some time. Supplements like flaxseed oil etc also suppress fungi for sometime. Thus there is relief from symptoms and you feel better after taking supplements. Now these fungi are nothing but part of normal flora. We cannot and should not wipe it completely. These fungi cause the dry and flaky skin on stopping supplements. These fungi are there in joints also and causing arthritis-like symptoms. This altered flora and probably presence of H pylori is causing bloating and regurgitation.

Now you are taking supplements to get relief. Supplements as such have side effects like indigestion, liver issues and worsened immunity. Lowered immunity causes more fungal growth. That is why I was asking you to let go of supplements. Once you stop supplements, you will get exaggerated IBS, joint pain and dry flaky skin. These symptoms will last a few days and then start to diminish. Slowly body achieves a balance. After stopping supplements these symptoms only come on and off and are not bad. You will have to bear them for only sometime. There will be long-term relief.

In allopathy the treatment of GERD (gastroesophagal refux disease) is to take long term medicines like omeprazole, etc. But you are not willing to take that.

Since you do not want medicines, the next option is to stop supplements and revert to healthy lifestyle like hygienic diet and regular exercise. I am actually giving you a solution to your problems. I have helped many people with similar issues and I know it works in long run. You need to trust me on this one.

But I guess you are looking for more supplements from me. Maybe you can try fenugreek powder. Don't lie down immediately after food. Take a walk after dinner. Thicker foods regurgitate less. Milk and antacids like tums are good at lowering acidity.

I am quite educated in medicine since I have relied on self medication for so many years. I've helped other people with herbal remedies and can distinguish between heart problems and indigestions. While living in Kenya (I am German but lived in and travelled 12 years through Africa), people were calling me a witch and came with all their problems to me. I even did minor surgery.
I might have forgotten to mention that I suffered from gastric malaria 30 years ago.
Most of my long term problems came from misdiagnosis. I've was clinically dead at the age of 5 because the doctor persisted of giving me penicillin even so I started to show signs of allergic reaction.
A Doctor injured my bladder during an examination.
Now I suffer from the after effect of an unnecessary hip replacement.
IBS in me was caused by mental abuse during childhood.
When ever I have been to a doctor in the last 20 years for my fatigue, which I had all my life, I've always get a prescription for depression, but I don't have depression, I have a very low blood pressure and a problem with my low metabolism.
Nobody ever even made an attempt to help me. So I stopped asking and just live with the dizzy spells in the morning and the constant tiredness.
Also every morning I have at least 2 hours of running nose and sneezing and feeling like a bad cold. But its always gone after a few hours to be back the next morning. (since 42 years) I call it my morning allergy, Allergic to getting out of bed.
I cant find anything to speed up my metabolism or getting my blood pressure up the natural way. I know that low metabolism is the reason for my lifelong battle with my weight. I am always dieting and eat as less as possible because I put on weight as soon as I eat. I was a fat child and teenager.
I did try to eat 5 little meals during the day. I've read that while dieting the body goes on starve mode and stores everything as fat and nothing as energy. It did not help and I've put on 10 kg within half a year. It was extreme difficult since there are so many foods I can not eat because of my IBS.
I did go to the gym and had a personal trainer,(needed him to make sure I don't do any further damage to my back) but the muscles in my stomach only pushed the fat further out and made me look even bigger.
I know how the body works. I know about GERD, and other indigestive problems.
Stopping supplements, while not getting the minimum of important vitamins and minerals through food, only causes more problems.
Arthritis does get worse when Omega 3, 6, 9 is missing from the diet.
At an older age its easy just to get old and degenerate and die crippled by arthritis with dementia and other old age symptoms, like people did before supplements. I am not willing to go that way.
I am not taking any supplements without researching for any side effects.
Hygienic diet is easy, since here in England everything is so regulated. Chemical and pesticide free food is difficult to get, except from the special shops.
Even bread is full of chemicals, that why I don't eat it.
Meat is full of antibiotics, that's why I only buy from a specialist butcher where I have the guaranty that the meat is chemical free. No Antibiotics come into my body to mess up my immune system. My immune system is very good, considering what it all has to put up with. I never get an infection when I cut my finger, and never get a serious cold, even when everybody around me coughs and platters, and I heal very fast.
I will re-examine my supplements and adjust my intake.
I might feel different when my teeth are out and I have a denture and learn how to chew my food again. Maybe that is the reason for the overgrow of bacteria in my stomach. The food is not really chewed when I swallow so maybe that causes the bloating, regurgitating and swelling of the upper belly.
You have not told me what I can eat to get the balance back.

Told you ways for graceful aging

Detailed Answer:
Hi again
Thanks for the details.

I have given you some nice tips for graceful aging.
Now coming to your question on what to eat, your intestine is not tolerating most foods. You have eliminated all sources of fiber in your diet.

My best suggestion will be to add fiber slowly to your diet. Maybe start with isabgol or metamucil small quantities in low fat milk. Slowly increase the quantity. Then add the fruits and vegetables that you can tolerate better. You can also add cream of rice, applesauce, avocado, tapioca, smooth peanut butter.
Foods that can help with probiotics are agave, beans, roots, herbs. If beans suit you, you can have a bowl of boiled beans in morning. Soya milk can replace cows milk.

Hope that helps.
