Posted on Mon, 23 Jun 2014
Question: I am having a boil on the inner side of my labia majora. I have been noticing it for past one month. It does not pain much, but sometimes it becomes filled with pus and on touching it is painful, after discharge of pus, it still remains swollen. I have been applying some topical creams as Deriva, Benzoyl peroxide and T-Bac cream, with mild relief. Since I have a history of Hidradenitis Suppurativa, I am very much worried. Kindly let me know a probable cause of the problem and recourse. thanks

Brief Answer:
you need to check your sugar levels

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,

Welcome to HealthcareMagic.

A have read your query and understand your concern.

Having recurrent boil with history of Hidranitis Suppurativa, points towards a low immunity, like seen with diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance or vitamin defeciency.

So i would suggest that you get a full glucose tolerance test done and checked. And if it comes normal, start of multivitamin supplements, along with antioxidants, and eat healthy with lots of fruits, green vegetables and fresh curds in your diet to boost up your immunity.

Regarding the boil, i would suggest that you take a course of oral broad spectrum antibiotic like third generation cephalosporins or amoxycilline and ofloxacin, to help eradicate the infection completely to prevent recurrance. But you need to see a local doctor for the prescription.

Hope i have been helpful.

Regards,
Dr. Deepika Patil.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Greetings! Thank you for replying to my question.

My doctor had done a sugar test(i am not sure if it is same as glucose tolerance) on me a year back and came almost normal. I had also met another doctor with the results who specializes in diabetes, I think an endocrinologist, and he also said it was fine. I have been taking multivitamins Revital for past several years, I was taking antioxidants, till some confusing reports I read on internet about the relationship between HS and antioxidants dissuaded me to take it. I was being very apprehensive and cautious. I regularly take fruits and curds, I do not know what else to do. I even stopped exercising because of this. Do you think amoxycilline can work, I am going to meet a female dermatologist today in the evening....DO you think this boil is the same as Hidradenitis suppurativa?

(A brief history of my HS :I had HS since 2008, and after several misdiagnosis it got first diagnosed in 2010. And since then after many doctors and many medicines, after lase it got treated in my armpits(both) in 2012, again it recurred in my right groin, but this time i stopped taking medicines (linezolid, cause i felt i was getting resistant), only hot fomentation, drainage, topical creams, and luckily it has cleared for past 3 months, but now there is a boil in the inner side of labia majora.)

Many thanks and warm regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
its all infection of hair follicle

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If your endocrinologist says, then you don't have diabetes.

Boil and HS both are infection of the hair follicle and both are usually caused by gram positive bacterias, so amoxycilline should work.

You can show to a dermatologist for proper clinical evaluation and confirmation of the diagnosis.

But as you are having repeated recurrence after brusting, so in my opinion a course of oral antibiotic should help. Maybe you dermatologist might even prescribe you one.

Also I believe that you sweat more, so its advisable to keep the areas prone for infection, clean and dry to prevent recurrence.

Do tell me what your dermatologist thinks about it.

Dr. Deepika Patil
