What Causes Rapid Heart Rate, Dizziness And Back Pain?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jun 2016
Question: Last week my daughter had what seemed to be a panic attack. Rapid heart rate ,numbness, light headed etc. Tonight she kind of has the same thing again. Lightheaded, back pain (like a pulled muscle)and a metal taste. What could the problem be? Should she see a doctor? She called an ambulance last week as she was okay but I am worried about her. She lives alone and is a little scared.

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

You're right that this is most likely a panic attack. However, it is important that other medical conditions be ruled out first. She should visit a doctor as soon as possible for basic bloodwork, a urine toxicology screen, and an EKG, as well as a basic physical exam. If these tests return normal, she should see a psychiatrist to help treat panic disorder, usually with a combination of an SSRI antidepressant and psychotherapy, which is curative.
