Posted on Thu, 14 Apr 2016
Question: I sleep too much, do not have energy to do simple chores when I am awake and in general am tired all the time. My endocronologist has ruled out hormone problems and my primary physician just gives medication for depression and referred me to a psychologist. I cannot force myself to get up and get going. What can I do?

Brief Answer:
Please visit a psychiatrist for evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Persistent, pervasive tiredness, fatigue, feeling like reduced energy, difficulty in getting up from bed etc symptoms could occur in depression but should be evaluated properly. Your endocrine evaluation revealed nothing so we can rule out problems related to thyroid and adrenals easily. Still other medical issues like Vitamin B12 deficiency and D deficiency should be ruled out.

I'd advise you to go for evaluation of B12 and vitamin D levels. This will help to rule out the conditions. Start taking B12 and Vitamin D supplements if levels come low.

If vitamin and nutritional deficiencies are ruled out then other possibility is depression. Medicines like SSRIs especially Sertraline can help to come out of depression and will improve the symptoms. Drugs like Modafinil can be used to improve day to day activities. So please visit a psychiatrist for evaluation of these symptoms and for proper prescription of these drugs. Regular therapy will result in improvement of these symptoms.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.
