Question: I am 55 1/2 years old male. I am not a diabetic. My father suffered paralysis. Two and half years back I was found with Hepatitis B. All the doctors, I visited advised me no medications. Before knowing Hepatitis B in my body and after finding I did not find any change in my eyes, skin colour etc. my weight is 97kgs. height 5.6". Since then I have been using condoms. I had been suffering from heart burning occassionally and I take omeprazole capsule on that instance. Now I am taking half tablet ditide a day for pedal oedema for last 4 days. 95% of ankle swelling is down. Now I am taking one telmisartan 40 mg tablet every day. I am a pure vegetarian, non alcoholic, non-smoker no extra marital relations. I am worried with this disease. what should I do ? How to save my children from this disease

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am Gastroenterolgist.

You have not been prescribes any medicines suggest that you are inactive carrier. Most of the time at this age if hepatitis B is inactive it may remain so through out life. But yiu still should get few test periodicall and regularly like SGOT AND SGPT every three monthly. HBVDNA quantitatively and HBeag and ultrasound abdomen annually. So that in case virus becoes active it coild be treated. Continue abstinence from alcohol. Do regualar exercise and reduce your weight by taking less caloric diet as obesity also has adverse effect on liver.

For you children and wife get them vaccinated with hepatitis B vaccine. Three doses are required at 0 1 and 6 months after which they will become immune to hepatitis B. This virus do spread by blood, sexual contact and not spread via other route. So get them vaccinated.

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you.. wish you a good health
