What Causes Passing Of Pink Tissue Through Rectum In Children?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Apr 2015
Question: My daughter is almost 4 and passed what looks like pink tissue after saying she had to go "poop" - there was nothing other than pee and this 'tissue' in the toilet after she had used the bathroom. She did not complain of any pain when going, but this did not look normal. A few weeks ago I took her to her pediatrician because of a similar passing (but it was much smaller). He said not to worry and that her diareahha she was having at the time was secondary to constipation and sometimes children just "pass strange things". I am concerned that this is still continuing and this last one was much larger than the first.

Brief Answer:
Get a stool test done

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Passage of pink tissue per rectum is something unusual.Sometime children swallow some foreign body which can come out during defecation.
Mucus mixed with blood can also presents with same.As this is painless and there is no diarrhea right now, any anal fissure or dysentery has been ruled out. Some uncommon causes like polyp, diverticula can cause blood mixed mucoid discharge.
I have seen the attached image and it appears to be small amount of stool(not blood, mucus or foreign body).
Still I would suggest you to get a stool test done for occult blood( the small amount of invisible blood) after consulting your physician to rule out any any bleeding per rectum.

I would be glad to answer if you have any further query

Thank you. As a follow up, she does appear to be irritated down there...says that it itches...and she tries to rub against the belt buckle of her car seat. when I examined her I noticed only a few red bumps around the anus and even on the butt cheek. But they are not raised. The irritation must be inside right?Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Perianal dermatitis should be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Welcome again

The irritation may be due to the itchy lesion around the anus. The red itchy rash around anus is called perianal dermatitis. The common cause is allergy to irritants(sometimes increased lactose in stool also act as irritant). Less common cause is infection(fungal/bacterial or parasitic).
I would suggest you to apply an ointment containing Zinc oxide after reviewing with your physician. Zinc oxide form a protective layer and it is also an antiseptic.
If the condition persists further evaluation will be needed to rule out any infection.
Regards
