Question: Hi, Dr. Rynne: I am experiencing leg pain in the inner thigh area with a history of DVT ( secondary) last event in Nov. 2015. Had an ultrasound just the last 4 weeks. It was inconclusive for a clot. ( old clot) this is on the right leg. I have pain in the left upper leg. Thanks for your input.

Brief Answer:
It could be DVT but no emergency.

Hello,
Welcome to Health Care Magic & Thanks for your question.
I am a Vascular Surgeon & will try to answer your query.
Have you had DVT only once or two episodes.
If you have had it only once then you need not take Xarelto anymore.
This pain in the left leg could be DVT but there is no emergency.
You can get a Color Doppler of the Left lower limb but there is no emergency.
If it comes out as DVT then you can start Inj LMWH again & then you would require Xarelto lifelong probably. You could send us the Doppler report & we could advise you accordingly.
Take care & do let me know.

I did have a DVT and prescribed life long for Xarelto. I think I need an ultrasound.
Could it just be a muscle strain with sudden onset? What are your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
It could be a muscle strain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for your answer.
Lifelong Xarelto is prescribed when a person has had two episodes of unprovoked DVT or has found to have a Thrombophilic state.
DVT is diagnosed by an investigation called Color Doppler or Duplex scan which looks & feels like an Ultrasound.
It could very well be a muscle strain. If it is DVT then there would be swelling. If there is no swelling then there is no DVT. Therefore do not worry. Get a Doppler done whenever you can. As it is you are protected by Xarelto.
Take care & do let me know if there are other queries.

Dr XXXXXXX Thanks. The Clinic Express care said that I had a muscle strain on the upper right thigh. I will be able to work it out and stretch it. I still have a DVT on the Lt. leg. However, this is old and there is not a clot in it. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
That is good news.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the reply.
Its very good that there is no fresh DVT.
For the other leg, since its old you can stop Xarelto & start Tab Ecosprin 75mg at night for the next 5 years.
That is all that you need.
Xarelto is supposed to be had for only 6 months.
Take care & do let me know if there are other queries.
