What Causes Pain In Right Foot Causing Difficulty In Walking?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Jun 2014
Question: I have been having pain in my right foot for quite a few years now (more than 5). Because of this pain, I won't be able to run for long and even walking for long distance increases pain. This pain is at a specific point in the foot (googled the technical term for the region of the foot - Lisfrank's joint). Met a Neurologist and he has attributed this to B12 defiiciency and minor slip disc (lumbar) which was discovered in a MRI. Inspite of taking B12 shots, pain still remains. I'd met a doctor who practises Accu Pressure as a method of treatment for treating back and neck pain. He'd recommended that I meet a podiatrist (had not heard much about podiatrist before this) and his point was that it's nothing to do with my back pain. Other points : 1. At times, I try keeping my foot in warm water with rock salt. It helps temporarily. 2. I'd met an Orthopedic as well and he'd called it a nerve inflammation. He'd recommended wearing cushion soles in the shoe and it helped for some time. I would appreciate if you can give me advice on this specific problem. Also it will be good if I can get some reference for doctors/podiastrist.

Brief Answer:
Agree with your podiatrist, Sounds like a Spur

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX Thanks for coming to HealthCareMagic.

First off I agree with your Podiatrist. This is not due to the disc issue or any kind of nerve inflammation. When a nerve gets impinged you get pain that travels all the way along the course of the nerve. Your pain seems more localized in the midfoot. I believe (from the description you have given) that you are suffering from a Calcaneal Spur. This is a bony outgrowth from the bones of the foot that is causing inflammation.

The recommendations for such a problem are pretty simple. Specialized Orthotic shoes (or at least specialized insoles for your existing shoes) are helpful for keeping the pressure off of your midsole. Pain killers like Brufen for when the pain is very bad. If the problem lasts more than a few months (and yours has lasted 5 YEARS!) then you need to look at 2 options.

1) Steroid injections directly into the Midsole to bring inflammation down.

2) Surgery to remove the spur.

X-rays of the foot will help determine if this theory is correct or not.

As far as a good Podiatrist.. unfortunately the field is very limited in the country. Your best bet is to go to HOSMAT (Bangalore), you will find someone who has seen this before over there.

I hope this helps. Take Care.

Vinay
