Question: I am having pressure/pain in my neck my arms are weak and feel like they weigh a ton and it is noticed every time my arms are above my head especially when I have weight lifted above my head. Once this starts it can last for days or weeks and then it may gradually get better. I have noticed it is getting worse and I was wondering what may be going on?
Brief Answer:
Get x-ray done.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your query.
You must get x-ray cervical spine done in AP and Lateral view and discus with orthopedic surgeon. Your doctor will do your physical examination and tally the reports to make your exact diagnosis. He may also advise you MRI scan of of cervical spine to see the condition of inter-vertebral discs, cervical nerves and surrounding soft tissue.
Your doctor may also advise you blood test i.e serum uric acid , E.S.R if he needed. Get your blood pressure under control by discussing it with your doctor.
Till then you can take tab. aceclofenac+thiocolchicoside by discussing it with your doctor.
Apply hot packs for 30 min in morning and evening. Try to avoid heavy weight lifting above shoulder level and try to study only on chair and table.
I hope it helps.

My pain specialist is wanting me to see a Vascular surgeon for something I thought he called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.....Can you shed some light on this for me please. I know that any time I play with my kids or do anything above my head my arms start to shake and they are weak for a long time keeping me up at night. Does this sound like it could be the problem? He said something about taking a rib out? I am really confused on this but I will do as you have suggested in your reply as well.
Thanks
Brief Answer:
Trust your doctor.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query again.
You must know that thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition whereby symptoms are produced from compression of nerves or blood vessels, or both, because of an inadequate passageway through an area (thoracic outlet) between the base of the neck and the armpit.
Treatment of the thoracic outlet syndrome can usually be successful with conservative measures. Treatments include a variety of exercises that effectively stretch open the tissues of the thoracic outlet. These are done with and without weights in the hands to pull the outlet into a "relaxed" open position.
Your doctor may advise you shoulder-shrug exercises and others can be done at home or at work to relax the muscles around the thoracic outlet.
Depending upon your symptoms your doctor might prescribe medications such as an anti-inflammatory medications (Ibuprofen) or muscle relaxants to help improve the symptoms.
Your symptoms may pose problem for you in future also that is why your doctor has advised you surgical operation to open the thoracic outlet i.e removal (resection) of the first rib in order to spare injury to the affected nerve and blood vessels from ongoing compression.
I hope you have got your answer.
Thanks.
Dr.Singh.
