What Causes Numb Feeling In Mouth During Sleep?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: I have been feeling a numb feeling in my mouth during my sleep, like my teeth were loose and/or my tongue was pushing them. Today I was eating meat and I felt like something was stuck between my teeth. I still could feel it and when I went and look in the mirror I notice that one of my teeth was shifted. Like it was suddenly pushed out. The next one looks push back and the following one looks lean to the side. I don't know what happened and I am really scared. I don't have a good or bad mouth hygiene. I try to brush my teeth at least once a day but may miss a day on weekends without brushing them. Thanks for your help

Hi. Thank you for your response.
1. Yes I always had pretty fragile gums. Bleeding if I brush my teeth too hard.
2. No I am not taking any medication.
3. Probably 2-3 years ago. I did not get around to see one after moving to the states.
4. I am using colgate optic white.
ps. I used to have a lot of gastric reflux which gave me bad breath. But after taking medications for GERD my reflux improved and almost stopped.
Thanks again

Brief Answer:
Periodontitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for reply.

From the details provided by you, it is clear that, it appears to be Periodontitis.

Periodontitis means diseased gum.Since the gum is not healthy the teeth feels loose and tongue pushing them out due to muscular force.Infection in the gums had lead to Numbess.

It is very much required that you should see your periodontist(a dentist who deals with gums exclusively).

Few x rays are required to see the condition of supporting bones of teeth. After evaluating those x rays, your periodontist will guide you about the treatment aspect. It requires a dosage of antibiotic too.

Please remember gum problems can lead to loss of one or all teeth, therefore please do not delay.Do not be worried but get the treatment done.

It also requires extensive maintenance from your your side.Maintenance includes regular twice brushing with soft brush and also brushing after each meal.

Do rinse with warm saline twice to thrice daily after food and see your dentist soon.

Hope it helps.
Let me know for further doubts.
Thanks.
Take care.

Thank you so much. You mentioned loss of teeth. Does that happen rapidly or over a long period of time?

Brief Answer:
Dental X rays advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for reply.
It is a slow process and called as chronic Periodontitis.

That's the reason I have mentioned in my answer to take simple dental x rays. They will show exactly how much bone is supporting the teeth and how much is already lost.
Based on which the treatment is planned.

Let me know for further doubts.
Thanks.
Take care.
