default
Posted on Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Question: I am having this needle pricking like pain in my left side of chest, which comes for few seconds and then disappear. Its been happening to me since last two days. Let me add that it could be acidity too, because in afternoon i burped and the pain was gone. I am 38 years old. I very tensed and fearful about the consequences of this pain. pls guide me and tell me what tests i should take to find out the real reason behind the pain and to also know the actual condition on my heart. I don't drink but smoke round 5-6 cigarettes daily. I had pain in my right side of chest too around a week back, which disappeared on its own.

Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Acid reflux disease most likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,

I have read your query and understand your concern,

As per your clinical history ,the chest pain seems to be atypical and of non cardiac origin. It usually goes in favour of acid reflux disease.

But nonetheless this chest pain in your case has to be carefully evaluated to rule out any associated cardiac disease.

The basic set of investigations which you need to undergo are
1.ECG
2.Two Dimensional echocardiography
3.Tread mill testing.

These set of investigations accurately can rule out any coronary artery diseases which can present with chest pain.

Simultaneously you to need to have an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy to detect the presence of acid reflux disease or GERD, that can quite typically present with chest pain resembling a heart disease.

Additionally I advise you to give up smoking as it can lead to worsening of both cardiac and gut disorders.

Hope I have answered your query at the moment,
Post your further queries, if any.
Thank you.
