Posted on Tue, 14 Jun 2016
Question: Hi I'm concerned about my 72 year old father. He is very active and usually walks 5 times a week. Recently he developed swollen fingers with pain. Then small cysts on his joints on his hands and wrist . Now one leg is swollen . All along with this he has internal itching that can't be eased by scratching. His doctors don't seem to know what is wrong. He has just had an MRI which showed fluid in his hands. What can be the cause of this which seemed to happen all of a sudden?

Brief Answer:
Can be polyarthritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I can appreciate your concern for your father.

The reasons for multiple joint pains in hands commonly are:

1. Rheumatoid arthritis-
2. Gout
3. Vitamin B12 deficiency
4. Vitamin D deficiency
5. Calcium deficiency

Ideal person to consult for this is orthopedic surgeon or rheumatologist.

Please discuss this with your family and doctor and ask for a proper referral.

Most of the cases respond satisfactorily to the treatment.

After examination the doctor may advise some investigations like

RA Test
S.Uric Acid
Vit D level
B12 Level
Blood counts
blood sugar
X ray as per need

In mean time, this should help.

1. Ask him to have more of fruits, vegetables soups etc.
2. Maintain healthy routine, keep walking till she has pain, and just stop before pain starts
3. Apply some analgesic ointment over the site of pain
4. Milk and milk products are good source of calcium

I hope this answers your query.
