Posted on Fri, 27 Oct 2017
Question: The last three days I have had a feeling that I need to poop often. I have had three colonoscopies (latest was about 2 years ago). I also know I have hemroids as well. Lately I have mucus in my stool (loose stool not watery) and is smells fishy or very bad?

Brief Answer:
Acute enteritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Most likely its gastroenteritis, usually gastroenteritis is by viral infection(Nova virus) and is self limiting,Takes five to sevendays,But as you mentioned its already more then three days so most likely you are having either bacterial or protozoal infection or a mixed infection.
I would suggest you to go for few tests
Ultra sound abdomen
Stool test under microscope
Complete blood count
Total and differential leucocyte count.

If stool test is positive for bacterial or protozoal infection.Start taking Zithromax(Azithromycin 500 mg once daily) and secnidazole 1 gram daily for 5 days.
Along with it take Fybrogel husk,It will increase the bulk of your stools.
Tab imodium 4mg stat folowed by 2 mg twice daily can be added to contriol frequency of motions
Eat light and easily digestible food.
Drink plenty of water and electrolytes to maintain rehydration.
Monitor puls and blood pressure twice daily

Youbwould be fine in a day or two.

Thanks for your reply. Tow things, I am now seeing bright red blood on the toilet paper in the mucus and feeling burning sensation.

I am on a first day of six days of vacation. We are in Florida until Monday afternoon. Can a doctor visit wait until I get home? What can I do until I get home?

Brief Answer:
Hemorrhoids.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
There are a few things to consider when a person says he has blood in the stool.

The first thing is if it is really blood. There are some food and industrial chemicals that might be in stool and give the impression it is blood and in fact, it is not. Unless it bright red blood (which is clear that it is blood). Other times the way to know if you are bleeding or not is having a stool occult blood test or a stool microscopy that will confirm the presence of blood with the stools.

Generally, blood coming from higher levels (stomach and small bowel) converts into a dark coal black colour due to the changes the blood has in the bowel. It is the bleeding from lower parts (colon) that will show as bright red blood.
l

A CBC would be a good test to be done if you suspect bleeding to see if you are developing anaemia as a complication of bleeding and need treatment for it or not.

So to conclude:
1. we need to be sure you are bleeding or not- a stool test like faecal occult blood test and or stool microscopy for blood will help in this, if you have bright red blood while defecating (passing stools) this might also be due to haemorrhoids which are mostly due to constipation so in meantime please make sure you take extra fibre with diet and drink plenty of water.if you had any massive rectal bleeding than an urgent visit to a doctor is needed otgerwise you can wait for a week.

Till the time you see doctor use OTC PreprationH use a combination containing contains Calcium Dobesilate, Hydrocortisone, Lignocaine, and Zinc. It will provide much better relief inncase of bleeding hemorrhoid.
I hope this is helpful but please feel free to reply in case any more clarification is needed on this.

Kind regards,
