What Causes Lower Back Pain And Swollen Legs Post Intake Of Misoprostol?
Question: I had an abortion using the pills 8 days ago. Soon after i took the misoprostol tablets I noticed a very sore and scratchy throat. Like I had been at a high school football game that nite, which I hadn't. Then the next morning I noticed my feet were swollen but I chalked it up to being up all nite going to the restroom w the abortion now in full swing. I also had EXTREME lower back pain, almost worse than but def equal to labor with my two kids. Again they said "bad cramps" but honestly it was as bad as labor, it didn't seem right but I've never done this before. By the next afternoon my throat was fine agin. It is now 8 days later and my legs are extremely swollen from toes to knees I have extreme pitting edema. I showed the pharmacist today and her only words were OMG,
I have several allergies and I'm not sure if any of them could've been in the misoprostol ex:, ibuprofen-hives, eggs-hives gastrointestinal want to die, sulfa/pcn/doxy- gastrointestinal
What should I do, could this just be allergic reaction? Will it go away? I'm struggling as single mom of two don't have time or money for Doctor if not NEEDED!

The swelling of the legs can happen after taking misoprostol but is not likely after 8 days of taking it. This is less likely to be an allergic reaction. Dryness of throat and bad cramps are normal effects of these tablets. It can be associated with nausea also. It is best to restrict your salt intake and keep the legs elevated on two pillows while resting. This should help in decreasing the swelling in next few days. In case the swelling increases or is associated with redness and pain in the legs then a color doppler is needed to rule out a deep vein thrombosis.
