Detailed Answer:
Welcome to healthcaremagic
Your grandson has low platelet and increased hemoglobin and pcv. This is called as throbocytopenia with hemoconcentration (you havent mentioned WBC count )Differential for such report with fever is dengue and dengue like fever and sometimes viral fevers...rarely leptospira can present like this.
In leukemia platelets fall. But along with it hemoglobin too can fall and WBC increases up to hundreds of thousands initially and decreases below 4000 later on.
Hope that I answered your query

Thank you. I had not heard of any elevated WBC (initial or otherwise). He has had a course of Zithromax, now having had his 5th dose, but this is also when lab work was pulled. I know that Zithromax will be effective another 5 days at least. However, if his condition is viral in nature, what concerns should we have at this time - considering that he has had asthma (now only needs an emergency inhaler periodically)? He has had chest tightness but relieved with emergency inhaler. He still eats well, but that weight loss has me puzzled. Any thoughts on this. And thank you very much.

In such type of infection most important is drink lots of water and liquids. He needs to be monitored daily or alternate day by your treating doctor for BP and platelet,HB,PCV.Once platelets start rising then don't worry.
Weight needs to be monitored. If no improvement then needs further evaluation for other conditions
Hope I answered your query
