What Causes Itching Sensation And Lesions On Skin Post Antibiotic Treatment?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: My wife is taking a high dose of probiotics to reestablish the "good" bacteria in her intestinal tract after having severe diarrhea from two different antibiotics. She was taking the antibiotics to treat an infected fingernail. After three days she has now begun to have itching, blotchy skin in places that disappears quickly with new blotches appearing elsewhere, swelling above her lip and some dizziness.

Are these symptoms consider "severe" and should we seek medical attention? She took the same probiotics (Florajen 3) three years ago with none of these symptoms. Our pharmacist recommended a high dose of Florajen 3: three capsules twice a day.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Probably an allergic reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
It is probably an allergic reaction.
I shall be able to give a better opinion if you could upload a picture of the lesion.
She could take an antihistamine and it might help.
If she is not improving, please consult a doctor.
Take care
