What Causes Irregular Periods After Stopping Copper-T IUD?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Dec 2014
Question: I had copper-t IUD for 2.5 years after which it was removed on 28th september. Got my period on 30 sept (on time as per my 29 day cycle). On day 3 of period (around 02 Nov) started with femilon contraceptive as per my gynaec's advice. Did not get any bleeding/period even after stopping the 21 pill pack.Just little spotting. SO after waiting for a couple of weeks, my gynaec put me on modus 10 tablet for 5 days (2 tablets a day) starting 7-Nov to induce withdrawal bleed. I took the last modus 10 tablet on 11 Nov. Its 6 days since i have stopped but there is no sign of my period starting. I have nausea, headache, mild fatigue ever since i have started taking the modus 10. I have taken 3-4 urine pregnancy tests (each with about 7 days gap in between) in the last 3 weeks, all came negative. I have PCOD too. But in the past my cycles have been regular ever since copper t was inserted. My questions: 1. are there chances of me being pregnant? 2. are the symptoms of nausea, headache etc related to modus 10 tablet? how long do these side effects last? 3. how many days more can i wait to expect my period? My doctor did not do any scans/ultrasounds or anything. do you suggest any further tests to be done?

Brief Answer:
chances of pregnancy might be less.

Detailed Answer:
Dear madam,
I understand your concern.

In my opinion :-

1) Modus tablet is a progesterone hormone which is given for withdrawal bleeding and other causes.
It causes side effects like nausea, headache, feeling of illness and fatigue .
Side effects last for 4 to 5 days.

2) As the urine pregnancy tests are negative,
the chances of pregnancy are less.

3) Nausea, headache, fatigue may be side effects of medicine or due to stress you are facing about pregnancy.

4) Usually period start after 3 to 7 days after the last dose of Modus.
So you can wait for one more day and check for the period ,as you have finished 6 days already.

If no period even after 7 days consult your gynecologist as you may require any combined hormonal pill for regularization of cycles.

5) I suggest you to get an ultrasound done to know the PCOD status and endometrial thickness and then go on for further management.

Hope this satisfies your query.
