What Causes Intermittent Pain In Hip Post An Injury?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Sep 2016
Question: I had a fall 9 weeks ago and was originally told the pain was from soft tissue damage and told to take pain relief, 2 weeks later my Dr sent me for xrays, I had fractured my hip and pelvis, the pelvis had healed and the hip fracture was showing signs of healing, I suffer from anxiety and panic disorder and chose to take the course of conservative treatment and have a Physiotherapist and occupational therapist and an excellent Dr, I have weaned my self off of the pain relief and following all exercises religiously, another xray 3 weeks ago showed healing with calcification and fracture line still visible,
2 weeks ago with my PTs permission I went out in car laid across back seat my partner went round the island and I felt pain in hip, ever since on and off its been sore, is this because of the car ride or because I have stopped pain relief or because I have increased exercise.
Am I optimistic thinking I shouldn't need pain killers after 9 week

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to increased exercise.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The intermittent pain that you are feeling is likely to be due to the increased exercise that has put stress on the incompletely healed bone. It is best to take a rest for now and avoid all painful activities. Taking a pain killer intermittently can help according to the need. You need to take your calcium supplements regularly to make your bones stronger and start with exercises gradually so as not to put too much stress on your bones.
I hope this answers your query.

Hi thank you so much for answering and for being prompt, do you have any idea with conservative healing roughly how many weeks post fracture will I be able to start partial weight bearing, I thought it would be sooner than now but because its gone painful again I am worried I have set it back to the start again, is that possible, also I did have really really bad spasms for a while and although I still get one or two after laying in bed flat for a couple of hours in the morning before partner gets up they have eased so is that a good sign.
Is it OK for me to ask more questions as I think of them while its open.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
10-12 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The fracture of hip and pelvis usually takes 8-12 weeks to heal properly. Partial weight bearing should be allowed at least after 10-12 weeks depends on the extent of calcification and healing the X-rays show.
Hope my answer is helpful. You can ask more queries in case you want to.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
A conservative healing can take 10-12 weeks. The appearance of pain suggests a repeat injury and you may need a few more weeks rest before you become pain free again. The bad spasms can be related to injury or a fluid and electrolyte imbalance. Do get the levels checked and start with proper supplements to help. It is not likely to be related to the bone healing. It can be due to the soft tissue injury.

Hi a couple more questions, hope you don't mind, when I finally start partial weight bearing should it be completely pain free or will there be a degree of pain, from partial weight bearing how long approximately would I be able to walk with say crutches or a frame, do you think I should have another xray before starting weight bearing? And my new wheelchair came yesterday and my hubby would like to take me for a walk into the village, should I wait or do you think this would be OK? My OT came yesterday and she read your replies and said she also would think pain would be from muscles etc can muscle pain be quite sharp.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
You need to have a repeat X-ray to check the extent of healing and then start with partial weight bearing after getting it examined from your orthopedician. The partial weight bearing will initially be painful due to the associated muscle stiffness. You will need physiotherapy and hot compress to relax the stiff muscles.
It will take 2 more weeks when you will be able to walk with crutches. You can go on a wheel chair till then. A muscle spasm can cause a sharp pain. Do relax and take a good care of yourself with a calcium rich diet to help healing.
Regards.
