What Causes Intermenstrual Bleeding?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: I am 48 and am having bleeding between periods. I had severe low abdominal pain at ovulation time that took me to my knees. After that I began having brown vaginal discharge followed by red blood a few days later. It would have been 10 days before my next period should have begun. I now have a dull ache on the left side in the lower left pelvic area and lower left back area.
I also have been getting bumps on the knuckles behind my finger nails and my middle fingers on each hand are beginning to curve outward toward my pinky fingers.

Brief Answer:
Can be hormonal disturbance or endometriosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The bleeding between the periods and a brownish discharge can be related to perimenopausal hormonal changes. However you need to get an ultrasound scan and PAP smear with colposcopy done to rule out endometriosis, ovarian cyst or a cervical pathology.
The bumps on the knuckles and pain can be due to arthritis. This needs an evaluation and a few blood tests under the guidance of an orthopedician or a rheumatologist.
