What Causes High Heart Rate, Blue Coloration Of Hands And Mild Chest Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Sep 2014
Question: I am inquiring about a 22 year old female friend of mine. She has recently been experiencing a high heart rate ( 130-148), mild chest pain at times, and a blue discoloration on the tops of hands that comes and goes. Mild numbness but not cold and not fingertips. She has celiac disease and suffered from bulimia and anorexia for the past year (currently getting treatment). Mother has cardiomyopathy and high blood pressure. After a few days of the high heart rate, pulse was low (40's) for 2-3 days, then has been high again

Brief Answer:
Needs further investigation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for using Healthcare Magic. The changes in her heart rate are quite significant. If these changes occur when she is at rest this would be abnormal and needs investigating. The chest pain is also concerning. She may possibly have an electrolyte abnormality related to her anorexia and bulimia. This is when some of the constituents of the blood become abnormal and this can, in extreme cases cause heart problems.
I suggest she needs further assessment and should see her doctor in the first instance. She would need blood work and an ECG initially.
I hope this is of help. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger
