What Causes Greenish Stool With Mucus In Infants?

Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: Hi,
My son is 8 weeks old and only breastfed. From Yesterday morning he had been passing green mucus in stool . Initially he had passed a little more watery stool than usual followed with mucus. Later the frequency increased to 2 stools(with green mucus) in an hour. It seems that he had food allergy since I had some dairy and spicy food products which might have caused this.we consulted the doctor who gave Walamycin medicine 2.5ml for 3times a day along with Pro-well 2.5 ml twice. We had given him 3 doses of Walamycin so far and 2 dose of Prowel(that is for one day). the green color in stool faded however little mucus still present. Please let me know is it advisable to continue the antibiotic or can stop since it was a food allergy.

Brief Answer:
Greenish stools are normal in a baby of this age. No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Let me assure you that in case of a breast fed baby of this age, green and mucusy stools are absolutely normal and not a cause to worry about. It is caused due to rapid transit of the fecal matter through the large intestines and the bile pigments do not get adequate time to get converted to yellow coloured pigment of stool. Moreover, passing stool 10 times is equally normal as passing stool once in 10 days and in neither case there is a cause to worry.
The child may pass stool after each feed that is normal too.It does not indicate food alelrgy on your part or on the part of your child.
For a baby of this age breastmilk is the best possible feed so if u are giving only breast milk thing would be automatically taken care of.
Although antibiotics have been prescribed, I do not think that they were essential. However, if antibiotics are begun, you should complete the course of atleast 3 days.
Antibiotic will not harm your child you need not worry about that. you can stop Pro-well or any other additional item u are giving.

If you continue breast feeding exclusively, I do not think that you would have anything to worry about.

Hope that helps.

Thank you doctor for your advise. As suggested we would be continuing the antibiotic(Wallamycin) for 3 days and stop and discontinue Pro-Well immediately.
Will this antibiotic reduce the immunity of the child to resist any stomach related problems in future since it has to be given even though its not required(As antibiotics for children of this age seems to b not good)? Also suggest for future reference, what is the alarming sign so as the child of this age to be taken to doctor for stomach related problems as in diaheria, gastro problems.
Awaiting your reply.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics do not depress immunity, you need not worry.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to reply back earlier.

Let me assure you that antibiotics do not depress immunity and do not pose any long term negative effect. So, you need not worry about the antibiotics that have been prescribed.

In future if the child develops diarrhea, all you have to do is to give increased amount of breast feeding. If the child is formula fed, only then ORS or oral rehdyration solution needs to be given. The adequacy of the hydration would reflect in the number of times urine is passed. If the passage of urine is more than 6 times over 24 hours, you can assume that there is no dehydration. Unless the child grows lethargic, you need not worry. But if the child stops feeding or becomes depressed, you will need to visit a doctor without delay.

Hope that helps.
