Posted on Tue, 30 May 2017
Question: Hi Doctor,
My daughter is approx 4.5 months old.
Her potty frequency was once in 2 days but, she is doing potty everyday for past 3 days. Also, potty is a bit loose though can't be considered as loose motion. Is this normal?
I would also request you to please suggest some general medicines just in case we need at some odd times (night etc):
1. Medicine for fever and dosage
2. Medicine for loose motion and dosage
3. Medicine for Vomiting and dosage
4. Medicine for stomach ache and dosage and symptoms of stomach ache

Brief Answer:
It is normal. Nothing needs to be done about it.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Let me assure you that for a baby of this age, it is normal to pass stool several times a day or even after each feed. Alternatively the child may pass stool once in 10 days and that is normal too. Unless the stool is hard and pellet like, you need not grow concerned. It is also normal to pass green stool or a combination of yellow stool. In short, you need not be worried about the stool consistency. Just continue to breast feed the baby.

Please let me know the body weight of the child and I will let you know the requisite doses.
1. Medicine for fever: Paracetamol (Calpol, Crocin, P-100 Drops)

2. Medicine for loose motion: Breast milk, in case of formula feeds ORS might need to be given. No medicines otherwise needed.

3. Medicine for Vomiting: Ondansetron (Ondem) or Domperidone (Domstal)

4. Medicine for stomach ache and dosage: Colicaid Drops 8 drops are to be given in case of excessive and unexplained crying.

I will await your response.

Regards

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your reply.

Her weight on 1st May 2017 was 6.5 Kgs and her date of birth is 20 Dec 2016 (she was 3.51 Kgs at birth). Is the weight ok as per her age?

Kindly suggest the requisite doses.

- Also, please suggest right time to start other things (complimentary food) apart from milk and what shall we start with?
- Shall we start giving her gripe water?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Brief Answer:
Doses mentioned

Detailed Answer:
Paracetamol Drops (100mg/ml) 1 ml SOS at a minimum interval of 4-6 hours for fever.
Domstal Susp 0.5 ml SOS for vomiting.
The rest have been mentioned. Gripe water is a substitute for Colicaid. You can give any one of the two although I prefer Colicaid.

Complimentary feeding should be started from 6 months of age and not from now. You can start with thickened liquids like dal water, fruit juices etc. when you start. Gradually you are to move to mashed semisolids followed by pounded solids.

Feel free to write back.

Regards
