What Causes Extreme Fatigue And Blurred Vision When Diagnosed With High Blood Sugar?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2016
Question: When i last posted here it was suggested that i be seen by an endocrinologist because i experience fatigues, blurry vision, burning eyes, etc. both when i wait too long to eat or about 30 minutes after i eat. So i got an endocrinologist and he suggested that i check my blood sugars regularly especially when these fatigues happen. What i notice is that when i have these episodes, my blood sugars move from around 110 quickly to 170-180. I know and am thankful that i do not have diabetes. My endocrinologist is asking that i change my diet towards a lower carb style and suggested that my reactions are related to eating or not eating.
I have three questions:
1. Is this insulin resistance or insulin sensitivity?
2. Will weight loss improve this?
3. If the answer to 2 is yes, what sort of weight loss program would you suggest? Do you stress the importance of diet, exercise, or both?

Brief Answer:
It is insulin resistance.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!
The values of blood sugar you reported are high and are suggestive for insulin resistance. It means that insulin can not transfer the glucose within the cells due to fat accumulation especially in the abdominal region. Insulin sensitivity is manifested with low blood glucose ( under 70 mg/dl).
I would suggest to check also Hb
A1c level also.
Diet and physical activity are the 2 main lines of treatment.
Low carbohydrate diet and 40 min physical activity are recommended.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta

Brief Answer:
About physical activity.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Well i gave you an example without knowing your actual condition.
Normally a clinical examination and a detailed medical history is very important. We can give you suggestions virtually but not treat properly.
The duration of physical activity and the intensity depends on many factors.
First of all before starting physical activity you should exclude cardiac pathologies and osteoporosis.
If one of these pathologies is present, the physical activity is not recommended or individual activity (deciding what type of activity and the duration) will be carefully planned.
If you are healthy women, i would recommend 3-4 times/week, starting with 20 minutes and raising gradually up to 40 min per day.
About the type of activity i would say it depend on your hobby.

I am always at your disposal for any other questions whenever you need!
Wishing all the best,

Dr.Mirjeta

Dear Dr. Mirjeta,
I will go to my gym today, Thursday, and Sunday. I have a garden and lots of trees and plants to put in. I also have two dogs who love to walk.

This has been an interesting adventure finding out what these fatigues are about. In the process I have been tested for pretty much everything! I've been seen by a cardiologist too and have been told I am fine. My bone density tests show that I have mostly osteopenia. I am careful in the gym with things that put stress on my hips and lower back.

I stand 5' tall and weigh 185. I've lost 10 lbs so far and will continue. I am told that weight loss for people with insulin resistance is slow so I may not subject myself to programs with weekly weigh ins and therefore frequent disappointments.

Thank you so very much for your help. You gave me a name for my experience as well as excellent suggestions as to how to make it better. I appreciate that! XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You are in the right way.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

It is so good to hear that you enjoy good health ( with small problems) and stop doing exams for a period of time!

Enjoy life! You have the possibility to live with the nature and eat healthy food (plant veggies and fruits in the garden).

It helps to keep away the stress too.

Will be a great pleasure to answer further questions in the future!
Best wishes!
Dr.Mirjeta
