What Causes Excessive Yawning And Constant Need To Breathe Deep?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Jun 2015
Question: My name is XXXXXXX I am 41 year old female with Turners Syndrome living in the Caribbean Island of Trinidad. A few years ago (2011- 2012), I got the flu, but noticed my breathing did not return to normal. Went to the doctor who told me that I was developing asthma, he prescribed an inhaler and allergy medication. I used the inhaler only for one month, but not certain it worked. My breathing improved, but went to another doctor for some joint pains, mentioned to him about the breathing and after his examination he told me I was not asthmatic. I went about for a long time feeling almost completely better, being active and not fatigued. Now over the last couple weeks I have noticed that I need to take a lot more deeper breaths and yawning a lot. Please help me figure out why this is and what can I do about it . Thanks much!

Brief Answer:
Get done PFT,hemoglobin level and thyroid function test.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, you should get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) at present to rule out bronchitis.
If this is normal then no need to worry much.
But if it is suggestive of disease (bronchitis) then you may need inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).
Another reason is anaemia and hypothyroidism.
So please let me know
1. Have you ever undergone PFT?
2. Have you tested for hemoglobin estimation and thyroid function test to rule out anemia and hypothyroidism respectively.
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX Bhavsar,

Have never had the following test done
1. PFT
2. hemoglobin estimation and thyroid function Test.

Do you also advise that a chest xRay be done?

Hope to see a doctor later this week, almost certain he would want me to have
those test done. I must also say that physical activity have not been affected
in any way and I am eating and sleeping as normal. Only thing strange was that
some weeks ago I tested my BP, and it was a little bit on the lower side (not very). Just at times feel as if I am not getting enough Oxygen and yawning alot.

Thanking you for your time and invaluable advice.

Brief Answer:
Hypotension can cause yawning.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
I can understand your concern.
Hypotension can cause yawning.
So better to get done blood pressure monitoring also.
And yes low oxygen can also cause air hunger and yawning. So also check your oxygen saturation.
PFT is needed to rule out bronchitis.
Chest x ray is generally indicated if patient is having coughing, fever and we are suspecting lung infection.
Possibility of lung infection is less in your case.
So chest x ray is not needed in your case.
So consult doctor and discuss all these. First diagnose yourself and then start appropriate treatment.
Hope I have solved your query.

Brief Answer:
Heart and lung diseases can affect oxygen saturation.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Heart and lung diseases affect oxygen saturation.
Hemoglobin of the blood carries oxygen to the organs. Lungs extract oxygen from environment and dissolve it in hemoglobin.
And heart through its pumping action provide blood to all organs.
So Pulmonary diseases like bronchitis, pneumonia, fibrosis can cause desaturation (low oxygen).
Heart diseases like heart failure, embolism, coronary artery disease etc can also cause desaturation.
Anemia (low hemoglobin) if severe, can also cause desaturation.
Hope I have solved your query.
