What Causes Excessive Sweating Upon Minor Physical Activity?

default
Posted on Fri, 25 Sep 2015
Question: Hello. I am a 64 year old man. I have always been in reasonably good health. I am active. I am 5 foot 8 inches and weigh 170 lbs. I take levoxyl tablets ( thyroid supplements ) as my thyroid was removed because of a goiter when I was 49. I exercise regularly. I drink 2 glasses of wine per day. Besides the thyroid supplements I take one low dose aspirin, about 5 per week. I do not have high blood pressure. 2 years ago I was hospitalized with amoebas in my liver. My problem is this: for the last month we have been having devastating wildfires in my area, XXXXXXX State. I have been in danger of losing my home and business. I have not been sleeping well. But the specific problem is that, for the last two weeks, I have been sweating after even minor exertion. I do not have chest pain or shortness of breath. But I sweat and that is very atypical for me, I used to only sweat in the warmest weather and with vigorous exertions. Thank you, Jeff XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Anxiety or Levothyroxin are cause of the sweating.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I have read the query and I can understand your concern. You are taking Thyroxin tablets for post thyroidectomy states and also have some stress especially related to losing the house due to fire. The stress is occurring due to anticipatory anxiety. So if we consider the causes of sweating then the possibilities are either levothyroxin use or due to anxiety.

Sweating is a documented side effect of thyroxin and a lot of individuals suffer such symptoms while on thyroxin. I'd advise you to get your thyroid status done to rule out thyroid hormone as cause of sweating.

Other possible cause is anxiety. In anxiety sympathetic overflow occurs which could result in sweating. For such sweating on minor exertion medicines like Beta blockers as Atenolol or Propranolol can help. These medicines will help to reduce the sweating and you will feel better. Please visit a doctor for evaluation and treatment of these symptoms.

Thanks, Hope this helps. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.

Take care
