What Causes Elevated Heart Rate In Young Adult?

Question: I am a 22 year old male studying sciences at University and we have been doing tests and my heart rate is very high. I do have high blood pressure because of having reflux which damaged my kidneys and I take medicine for that but I never noticed a high heart rate

Welcome and thanks for the query.
Heart rate can be elevated due to a number of reasons.
If you have damaged kidneys, anemia can be a cause. Other common causes are are hyperthyroidism, cardiac arrhythmia or stress induced.
As a science student, you may be aware that blood pressure is the product of heart rate and stroke volume. So your blood pressure also would improve when your heart rate is brought down.
Do let me know your recent blood results, findings of the ECG if you had one and the medicine you are on for blood pressure, if you want to know how I treat my patients with such a problem

Thank you Dr. I have been on Candesarten for years. My kidney specialist added a diuretic to it last August and it helped for a little while but I am back to 150/100 on average which I know is not good. I cannot seem to find a medication that completely gets it close to normal. I am only 22 and worried that all these events are damaging my organs and now a high heart rate. Otherwise I am very healthy and strong.

The best heart rate to have is about 70 to 75 per minute. You have not mentioned what your heart rate is.
Don't worry, I shall help you bring it down to normal. With that I am optimistic that your blood pressure also would be controlled.

My heart rate was 114 at rest and 138 after 5 minutes of exercise. I have had kidney function tests over the years and some damage has been done to 1 kidney and very minimal to the other. Neither is extensive and it remains the same. I had Grade 4 reflux which was corrected at 8 years old. Right away from after the operation my blood pressure was high and I went on medication. At 13 my blood pressure normalized and I went off medication but it was up again when I was 17 and I have been on Atacand ever since with just slight adjustments but I am seeing the specialist at the end of this month and I think it needs to be increased or maybe even changed

You are most likely to have a sinus tachycardia which can be confirmed by an EKG.
The treatment I give my patients with sinus tachycardia is either Nebivolol or Bisoprolol.
The heart rate and blood pressure get under good control and it improves response to stress and anxiety also.
