What Causes Elevated Blood Sugar Levels While On Steroids?

Question: hi my father 62 years. 4 weeks back his voice became slurring .we got admitted him in hospital .
there doctor did mRI (report enclosed) and have Dexamethasone and levepsy 500 mg twice.later his voice became ok . after discharge he was on levepsy 500 mg but his voice again became slurring . he is a diabetic patient. now hia face has also slightly tilted towards left and voice is unclear. doctor now started predmet 16mg twice and forepan 40 . now there is no improvement but sugar level has increased a lot. he is taking humsulin 15 mg night and 25 mg morning but still it's 100 after fasting and 300 after breakfast. please advise

Thanks for your question.
Noted your concern.

As your father is on Steroids (predmet) which has anti - insulin action.
Due to which there is increase in insulin resistance and blood sugar rises. It mainly increase post-prandial blood sugar levels like in your father.
Increasing the dose of short acting insulin like Humsulin R may help with monitoring of post-prandial blood sugar levels.

If heart and kidney function is normal use of oral medicine like Metformin (if no other contraindications for its use) may help.

In such a case detailed history taking & physical examination is important to know exact type of diabetes Type 2 or Steroid induced.
Better to discuss it with his treating diabetologist.

Regarding MRI finding and fluctuating neurological symptoms keep following neurophysician.
According to me your father is on right track regarding neurological symptoms.
