What Causes Dry Hacking Cough At Bedtime And Post-nasal Drip?

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Question: Hi I've been taking Hydromet syrup for a while through my primary care physician for a dry hacking cough, mostly at bedtime, due to chronic allergies, post nasal drip, etc. My doctor has moved away to start a practice in a larger city (Annapolis, MD), and I now have a new physician. He wants to start completely over with me, going through the masses of cough remedies that I went through for years, prior to getting complete relief with Hydromet. I'm looking for a new doctor to continue my prescription with. Any help?

Brief Answer:
Drug dependence

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Hydromet( hydrocodone/homatropine ) syrup is an anticholinergic and narcotic cough suppressant combination. The anticholinergic works by drying up secretions and the narcotic depresses the cough reflex in the brain.
Some people who use Hydromet syrup for a long time may develop dependence or addiction. If you stop taking Hydromet syrup suddenly, you may have withdrawal symptoms. These may include feeling unwell or unhappy, anxious or irritable, dizzy, confused, or agitated.
Hence you need to be gradually taken off this addicting drug. Moreover it does not cure you of nasal allergy or postnasal drip ;only it suppresses your cough.
