Posted on Thu, 6 Nov 2014
Question: Not a big drinker but went out friday night and had 7 beers and could not pee. Extreme bolting. wasn't til the next day i could force pee only little squirts, i did this for every 15 min for 24 hours. (friday night 2:00 am till saterday night about 2 :am.) When i force pee i would usely have moist stool. its much better now but still little bolting and only peeing every 15 min. My stream is much stronger even thu im pushing to pee, how long Is this going to be before it pass? What should i be doing for quicker results. I get a pain when i stand vertically straight up, but when slightly bent forward no pin, are my muscles just sore from pushing to pee?

Brief Answer:
urinary retention underlying BPH due to drink

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for contacting HCM.Alcohol is a diuretic and you make alot of urine after an alcoholic binge. You may be having an undiagnosed benign prostate hyperplasia. The symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia can get exacerbated in the setting of alcoholic binge. What you are facing right now may be urinary retention due to exacerbated BPH.
for this acute episode alpha blockers like terazosin would help which relaxes teh bladder neck. If the urinary retention occurs for too long, you must visit a doctor to get this medicine or to be passed a foley catherter since long term urinary retention can lead to renal failure due to back up effect. However it is very likely that it will resolve on its own as the effect of alcohol passes off which is for a few days at the most. Thank you. I hope it helps. Is this terazosin an over the counter med.? Im googleing it now to find where to buy it?Ok,disrearguard my question. Is it ok to drink plenty of water to flush the alcohol out and (2) is ok for me to "push" when i pee. The idea is to get the alcohol out correct? Yes im much better and its been only 1 day and 1/2 of symptoms and is getting better.

Brief Answer:
drinking more water won't help

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
you should put in normal force what you use for urinating, extra force won't help. Just let it out if you feel like it. Hopefully it would get better in two days or so. No you don't need to drink alot of water. Its alcohol making lots of water in your kidneys and then making you pee out while the outflow tract is being blocked by benign prostatic hyperplasia. That is why you are having the pain since your bladder is full of water. Drinking more water won't help. Just drink what you normally do. The episode hopefully will go away in a day or two , if not visit a doctor. As for terazosin no its not an over the counter drug.
