What Causes Difficulty To Extend Arm After An Injury?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Dec 2014
Question: I fell about an hour ago, tripped over a cord, and landed on the heel of my hand. My hand and wrist do not hurt but my fore and upper arm does. I can't extend my arm nor can I touch my nose with out pain. If I twist my arm in anyway it is painful. I do not see any swelling. Could it be broken, or just a sprain?

Brief Answer:
Bone injury not likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain during the movement of the arm is a normal finding after such an injury. It is usually due to muscle sprain and soreness. If you can touch your other shoulder after folding the arm and there is no considerable swelling in the shoulder area then any bone injury or dislocation is not likely.
You can avoid doing any overhead movements and give rest to the arms. In case there is a sudden acute pain on a specific movement then a ligament tear needs to be ruled out after an MRI scan.
I hope this answers your query.
