What Causes Cracking Of Lips At The Corners?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Oct 2014
Question: My Daughter of 17 years 11 months is having problems on her lips and inside of the mouth.
It started with cracking of the lips at the edge of the lips 2 days back. Now, the skin is peeling off on the lips and there are boils on the lips also.
Also,in the inside of the mouth, skin is peeling off and there is a burning pain on the lips. Lips are swollen and becoming reddish. She is saying it is becoming worse.
Had applied Mustard oil on the navel last night and vaseline on the lips and Lip balm. The skin has become very rough and grainy on the lips. Skin keeps peeling off from the lips and the insides.

Brief Answer:
Cheilitis, needs multivitamins

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
The pictures and description fit into cheilitis.
This can be associated with thumbsucking, lip licking, infection or multivitamin deficiency.
I would advice you to continue vaseline application to help in healing.
If not improving consult with your doctor to look for other infections like in throat or mouth which if present will needed to be treated with antibiotics like amoxicillin.
I also advice such patients to start multivitamins like zincovit once daily for a month.
Wishing your child speedy recovery
