What Causes Constant Pain In Left Upper Arm?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: Hi there I started having constant pain in my left upper arm last Thursday. Before this it would bother me every once in awhile when I lifted weights at the gym but now it's constant. When I lift it up and out from my body If feels like its catching on something. The pain is about a 5 all the time but when I lift it above my head or out to the side or even try to cross my arms over my chest it gets up to a 10. It's a sharp constant pain but is deep in my arm. It hurts when j touch the area as well. Is it possible that I may have torn a muscle or ligament from lifting too much?

Brief Answer:
It most likely is tendinitis (inflammation of tendon and its sheath).

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing healthcaremagic for posting your query

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

I have gone through your question in detail and understand your concern.

It most likely is tendinitis (inflammation of tendon and its sheath). Commonly involved tendon is long head of biceps in bicipital groove. Probably it occurred due to overexertion(overwork) due to more weight lifting. It can be confirmed by MRI of shoulder. Treatment of it is rest to shoulder, icing and analgesic such as ibuprofen. You are already doing this. You should stop exercises and weight lifting. Left hand should not be used in work. I most of time give local triamcilone injection locally at tender(painful) point with good results to persons coming to my clinic .

You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
