What Causes Cold And Tingling Feeling In The Throat?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Nov 2016
Question: Hello, all of a sudden I got a cold, minty feeling in the back of my throat. It feels like cold air is going straight to the back of my throat and drying it out. I am breathing normally through my nose and have not eaten anything spicy or cold. I have been staying hydrated. What is causing this weird sensation and what could I do to stop it?

Brief Answer:
Watchful waiting;keep good oral hygiene...

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concern.

This is a kind of situation that happens when you eat a minty candy.

Reflux makes the throat get inflamed which makes the local temperature to rise. this gives you the sensation of cold when you breathe. This is true if you get this feeling for a long time. Taking PPis like Omeprazole can help improve stomach hyperacidity.

First, make sure you do not eat any menthol containing foods.

A viral infection can cause such feeling at first, then, sore throat will appear. Any drug you take can alter stomach hyperacidity or might cause the minty feeling in your throat especially if you do not get it with a full glass of water.

For the moment, I advise to avoid menthol containing foods/candies/drinks.
Keep good oral/throat hygiene. Gargle with warm water and salt.

If the feeling will continue, a further ENT examination is advised to rule out possible throat infection.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have further queries.
