What Causes Clear Vaginal Discharge?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Nov 2014
Question: Four weeks ago I scheduled a appointment with my PCP due to complaints of a clear vaginal discharge. My doctor gave me an internal exam and looked at a sample of my vaginal fluid under a microscope in her office. She informed me I had a bacterial infection (nothing infectious) and prescribed me Metro Gel to be used 1 x d for five days. After the course of treatment I continued to have discomfort. My PCP prescribed an oral Metrozonale. I completed the course of antibiotics as directed. I STILL had discomfort so I telephoned my gynecologist. She did an internal exam with a sample of vaginal fluid. She said I now had a yeast from the antibiotic and the bacterial infection was still present. She prescribed Diflucan and also put me back on MetroGel this time two times a day for seven days and if it did not clear up she said she would do a complete geno panel. I thought it was taken care of. Unfortunately one day after I stopped taking the MetroGel I realized it is back. I am so uncomfortable - very irritated and painful and I am also having back pain which flares up between antibiotic treatments. I have only one partner and he is my husband. I will telephone my doctor tomorrow, however would like some insight into this problem from another opinion.

Brief Answer:
Recurrent vaginal yeast infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

According to your information, you are mostly suffering from Recurrent Vaginal Yeast Infection.

I suggest to undergo one CULTURE of vaginal discharge and DRUG SENSITIVITY TEST along with blood sugar (PPBS) and differential count for evaluation (if NOT done any of these tests).

Next thing, you have to ELIMINATE or CORRECT some predisposing factors like mental stress or anxiety, lack of sleep, poor eating habits, using antibiotic or steroid frequently, weak immune system, Cervicitis, poor genital hygiene etc.

To summarize, you have to MODIFY all these things to get most effective result. You should consult with your GYNECOLOGIST for proper guidance.

TREATMENT: 1) Vaginal suppository like CLINGEN (combined Clindamycin and Clotrimazole) can be used for 7 to 10 days for recurrent infection.

2) Use vaginal moisturizer cream like RepHresh pH gel or VAGISIL cream to avoid repeated infection and maintain vaginal pH. Maintain genital hygiene properly.

3) Wear only cotton clothes. Don't wear any tight fitting cloths to avoid repeated friction/ irritation. Take sound sleep adequately.

4) Take healthy diet with anti oxidant (like Vitamin -E or C, Selenium, Zinc etc) supplements. Drink plenty of water or juice for better systemic circulation. You must avoid SALTY/ SUGARY/ FATTY foods.

5) Avoid chemical cosmetics, perfume or scented bath products around genital area. Keep the area mostly dry. You should avoid unprotected intercourse with chemical lubricant until problem is resolved completely.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
