Brief Answer:
Blood in sputum

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You notice blood in your sputum after using a nasal allergy spray. The blood that you have is minimal and probably from the nasal spray. The sputum looks clear and therefore not infected. The sputum and blood is coming from your nasal passages and does not mean anything dangerous. Nasal sprays can cause irritation to the nasal linings and cause a little bleeding and is expected. I can reassure you this is okay and nothing to be concerned about

Thank you. I noticed a couple small specs of blood a few days ago- about the size of point of pencil that was not around the time i used the nasal spray. Just want to make sure you dont think the rib pain and this blood are related- lung cancer etc? What symptoms should i seek doctors care if i see? Thank you

Brief Answer:
no threat of cancer

Detailed Answer:
The amount of blood is minimal and not anything unusual. This is not enough blood to indicate infection or cancer of the lung. Since the sputum is clear there also no risk of pneumonia or bronchitis.

I do not think you need to see a medical provider with this small amount of blood.

If you develop more bleeding or develop fever and chills with a purulent green color sputum then see your medical provider

Thank you, the prior rib cage pain and this blood together are not a sign of cancer - correct? Looks like my question got submitted twice and attached is other doctors answer. I like yours better obvoiuosly but please let me know what you think. This am had a little blood in phelgm, see picclear again but gone now- seems to occur in the morning. Did not use nasal spray today. Had a checkup few months ago with blood work and it was normal. Thank you for the help.,

Brief Answer:
Blood in sputum

Thank you for contacting us again.

The blood is still present but it looks very minimal. Again because the sputum itself is clear I would say that the blood is coming from either your nasal area or your throat. If your cough is forceful and hard then you can be irritating the airway. I definitely do no think you have any type of cancerous growth causing your bleeding.

I would recommend stopping any aspirin or NSAIDs as they cause increased risk of bleeding. Try a cough suppressant like Robitussion to reduce your cough.
