What Causes Bleeding While Having Mirena IUD?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Nov 2014
Question: I have had the mirena iud for a while, actually just had a new one placed a few months ago. I have never had issues with it, no periods, no spotting. However, this afternoon when I used the restroom there was a good amount of blood, red in color. I placed a tampon thinking I may just be having breakthrough bleeding, however when removed it only had a small amount of brownish blood, should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Side effect. Small amount is NOT concerned.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

According to your information, it is MOSTLY suggestive of side effect of inserted IUD (Mirena). Spotting or breakthrough bleeding is a quite COMMON phenomena for initial 1-3 months.

Side effects include expulsion, pelvic inflammatory disease or infection, spotting or irregular menstrual pattern. It has also greater risk of ectopic pregnancy.

Small amount brownish blood is NOT a concerned thing. However, if it continues for few days, then pelvic infection should be ruled out. In that case, you must visit to your gynecologist for pelvic examination and proper management. In addition, you should maintain genital hygiene and check the thread periodically.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.
