What Causes Bleeding From The Ear?

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Apr 2017
Question: My 14 year old daughter woke up with painless bleeding from one ear. She had "10 year tubes" put in, for chronic OM, about 5 years ago. No head trauma. She had mild epistaxis the day before yeasterday. I can see blood behind the eardrum but can't see the tube or perforation due to coagulated blood pooling there. No pain, tinnitus, or facial nerve impairment. She says there is some aching in her upper throat. No recrnt ear pain or fever.

Brief Answer:
Bleeding from ear

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to HealthcareMagic and thanks for putting up the query
Spontaneous ear bleed with no pain is usually due to trauma. As the child had an episode of epistaxis also and there is history of chronic otitis media, it is probably due to eustachian tube blockage causing ear discomfort. It is common for children to unknowingly tamper the ear due to irritation This can result in canal injury or drum injury. My advice to you is that keep the ear dry. don't use any ear drops or ear plugs. Use a decongestant nasal drops. Get the child examined by an ENT SPECIALIST and get an ear microscopic examination done. Also get a x-ray paranasal sinuses done.
For throat pain, use hexidine gargles. Take tablet vitamin c once daily.
Take tablet paracetamol for pain.
All the medicines I have prescribed will be available only on prescription.
Any further questions are always welcome.
Wishing her good health.
Thanks and regards
