What Causes Abnormal Menstruation?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: I have been menstruating every 3 weeks for the past 3 - 4 years. (I will be 51 in a couple of weeks). I missed a cycle about 4 weeks ago and now I having been bleeding since last Friday. The first couple of days were light (that is normal for me) then I've been bleeding unusually heavily (for me) since Sunday. Typically I would be done menstruating by today and just have had spotting for the last couple of days, but I am still bleeding heavily. Is this normal for my age? I've never even had a hot flash.

Brief Answer:
Can not be taken as normal

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,welcome to HCM forum.

Now you are nearing menopause.
It is very common to have some irregularity in the cycle during this period, which mainly occur as change in cycle length rather than as heavy bleeding.
Even though this can be associated with some menorrhagia, heavy bleeding at this age needs detailed evaluation to rule out any significant uterine pathology.Usually, these results from simple causes like endometrial hyperplasia(which may need only hormonal treatment);but we have to exclude uterine neoplasm also.

So kindly see your gynecologist for evaluation. After examination, you will be asked for some investigations like blood work up,USG,and sometimes D&C.

Meanwhile, take hematinic tablets(iron+folic acid) to replace ongoing blood loss.

Hope this will answer your query.
Wishing you good health.
Thank you.
