What Causes A Pus Filled Bump Near The Genitals?

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Nov 2016
Question: Herpes or Ingrown hair?

So, last night I realized that I had a big bump around my genitals that didn't hurt or itch at all when touching. Today, the bump was not as big as last night. I ended up popping it somehow and a pus came out followed by a lot of bleeding. Again, it didn't hurt at all.

I have attached a picture of the bump.I am really nervous since it started bleeding.

Brief Answer:
Folliculitis, most resolve spontaneously, try not to pop it.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

This does not have the appearance of herpes. Herpes is a very red, itchy, painful rash that has very, very small bumps. This has the appears of folliculitis which is superficial inflammation of a follicle, usually a hair follicle, caused by infection, local trauma, or chemical irritation. It can occur anywhere on the body. Most of them are itchy, but not painful or tender.

Almost all folliculitis will resolve spontaneously. Antibiotics are unnecessary.

I would recommend:
- Avoid shaving or waxing in that area.
- Use a warm compress several times daily
- Use antibacterial soaps to clean it
- Clean all of your towels, sheets, and bath tubs
- Keep skin intact, avoid scratching and popping due to chance of spreading the infection
- Dispose of all previous use razors
- Wash hands with antibacterial soap after touching.

Let me know if you have additional questions.
