What Cause Chronic Diarrhea?

Question: My 90 yr old Mother has Diarea for 6 wks has taken 2 rounds of Medication prescribed to her by her Internist, to no avail! Question: Shld she see her GI dr?

I am sorry for the situation your mother is in.

Regarding to diarrhea she is having since 6 weeks now, I need to have more details :
- is it watery?
- bloody? mucus?
- does she have abdominal cramps?
- color of her stool (yellow? Clay white? )
- medications she tried so far?

With regards to your query : if the medications she tried so far did not help, then should she her GI specialist for further evaluation.

Reply: no cramping, watery stool, normal color, no blood. Had a couple days normal stool, then Diarea right back. Medication was something to harden stool & stop Diarea.

1. Foods she has been consumed recently (anything new?)
2. Bowel infection (intestinal parasites which are commonly occurring among patients of the same age of your mother or candida infection)
