Brief Answer:
Pain and unable to bear weight.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.
I am Dr Rakesh Sharma answering your query.
I can understand your concern.
A person who has hair line fracture hip has following symptoms,
1.pain in the hip and groin area
2.the inability to put weight or pressure on the affected hip and leg
3. The affected side leg may feel shorter.
The main stay of diagnosis is XRay , but it has its limitations.
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan may show a break in the hip bone better than X-rays. This imaging tool produces many detailed pictures of the hip area. Your doctor can view these images on film or on a computer screen.
A computed tomography (CT) scan is another imaging method that produces pictures of the hip bone as well as the muscles, tissues, and fat that surrounds it
Hope I have answered your query.
If any thing else you are welcome.
Good luck.

There is some pain when I walk and it does cause me to limp. There is absolutely no pain when setting, sleeping or doing light exercise. Does a hairline hip fracture normally require surgery?

Brief Answer:
Bed rest is main treatment of hair line fracture hip.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Your case does not seem to be of a fracture, but it should be confirmed by investigations.
Bed rest is main stay of hair line fracture hip.
IN case of hair line fracture, An orthopedic physician may choose to put a patient on bed rest instead of surgical intervention for a number of reasons. If the physician considers the hairline fracture stable, they may feel that the hip has a likelihood of healing without surgery and opt instead for bed rest. Physicians will follow the patients during bed rest and take periodic X-rays to view how the hip is healing. If a hip fracture suddenly becomes unstable, patients may have to undergo surgical intervention.
Hope I have answered your query.
Please also feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

I am from Minnesota and am in Arizona for 3 months (until the 1st of April) If I do nothing and be very careful until I return to Minnesota could I actually end up with a full blown broken hip?

Brief Answer:
May return with displaced fracture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
If at all there is fracture and it widens then you will have more trouble than now.
It can fixed only by rest now , but if both ends of bone separate too much , then you may have to go through surgery.
So in my opinion it is better to get it done now.
