What Are The Symptoms Of ADHD?

default
Posted on Wed, 16 Apr 2014
Question: I am a 27 year old female and have only recently come to the conclusion that I most likely have ADHD. From all the research online and all symptoms I have read about, I can identify myself with 90% of them. Sometimes I don't know why I get distracted in everything I do, nor what I am thinking about when someone is trying to explain/talk to me. I interrupt, I am so clumsy and knock things over all the time, sometimes I dont even know how a lot of things happen to me. I am ALWAYS late for everything, my dad says Ive been like that all my life, and always yelled at me for it. I lose basic things like my keys, wallets and documents. I feel like my mind is always on the moon. I have tried to clean up and get organized at home, but still I find a lot of symptoms. Is this laziness? And why cant I control it even when Im trying hard to concentrate? Should I seek professional help and who? What self-treating options do I have?

Brief Answer: You should consult a psychiatrist Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help you in this query. The symptoms, who have mentioned, are more towards ADHD. In that case, whether you need medication or not, that depends upon the severity. ADHD is childhood onset disorder and with age, its severity decreases. That means, may be at childhood you would have more severity than now. ADHD normally effects on concentration, that why you are feeling difficulty in making concentration. It is not due to laziness. You should consult a psychiatrist for proper assessment and evaluation. There are certain medicine like methylphenidate or atomoxetine that would help to control symptoms, but there dosage depends upon the severity and these drugs are not available over the counter. There are certain techniques which you could follow like draw a circle on paper and color it, try to put beads on thread, mix any of two pulses and try to separate them etc. These techniques would increase concentration and sitting power. In case, you need further help, you can ask. Regards Dr. Abhishek Kapoor Psychiatrist
