Question: My Parents (Aged 60 and 58) are visiting religious places in North India & Nepal for a month. I heard there is some antibiotic injection needs to be taken for the same. If yes, can you suggest whether it is advisable to go with the same? My mom has BP & Sugar and both are under control.

Brief Answer: Vaccinations for North India and Nepal Detailed Answer: All travelers to North India should be up-to-date with their routine immunizations and are advised to consider hepatitis B vaccine. Particularly important is making sure that the traveler is immune to measles. 1) Hepatitis A Vaccine : All travelers to North India should be protected against hepatitis A. 2) Typhoid Vaccine: It is the part of the world from which most travel-related typhoid is imported, and thus, even for short-term travel, a typhoid vaccine should be recommended. More compelling for those who are hesitant is the fact that typhoid fever acquired in India is becoming increasingly resistant to quinolone antibiotics, sometimes requiring parenteral therapy. 3) Malaria: For short-term travelers spending 1–2 days in Delhi in the winter, insect precautions alone may be sufficient to prevent malaria. Travelers should be reminded that malaria-transmitting mosquitoes primarily bite between dusk and XXXXXXX I hope this helps. Feel free to follow up. Vinay

Brief Answer: The sooner the better! Detailed Answer: These vaccines can cause minor fevers and a bit of body ache. The sooner you get them the better! It will give them time to get over the side effects before they have to travel. As to dosage, they are normally sold as single dose vials. Just take them to their primary doctor and ask for these vaccinations and they will dispense the vaccine right then and there. Take Care! Vinay
